Secondary Questions / Joseph Smith
Joseph Smith’s involvement with treasure-seeking and folk magic.
What the question is
Joseph and his family participated in folk practices common in early-19th-century rural America, including the use of seer stones to look for buried treasure. He set these activities aside as his prophetic mission unfolded, in a way that fits the larger pattern of God meeting people where they are.

How this often lands
Most of us would prefer our prophets to arrive without any of the rough edges of their time and place. God has a long history of working with ordinary people in their actual circumstances. The deeper question is what God did with him, and that question belongs to the Spirit to answer.
