Secondary Questions / Joseph Smith

Why are there multiple accounts of the First Vision, and why do they differ?

What the question is

Joseph Smith left at least four firsthand accounts of the First Vision and several secondhand accounts. They were given at different times, to different audiences, for different purposes — and they emphasize different details, the way our own retellings of important moments tend to.

How this often lands

Multiple accounts are normal for any deeply meaningful experience. The pieces converge on the central facts — that God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph — and that center is where the witness rests.
